Your Home Theater vs. Your Local Cinema

Home Theaters HoustonOld and young, boys and girls, Moms and Dads – who doesn’t love watching a good movie?  It’s a great way to spend some quality family time together, enjoying a comedy, drama or documentary.  In today’s high-tech world, the question is this:  what is the best option – watching a movie at the local movie theater or watching it in your family’s home theater?

Of course, there are advantages to both.  The biggest advantage of seeing the latest movie at the theater is that you will see the picture on a much bigger screen.   Other than screen size, there aren’t really any specific advantages for viewing the latest blockbuster at the local theater.

There are, however, many reasons why a home theater is a much better choice for spending tme together at home.

Ticket cost

Let’s start from the moment you walk into the theater and pull out your wallet at the ticket counter.  A family of five is typically going to have to pay at least $40-50 or more for just the tickets alone.  Consider the fact that for that kind of money, you could have several months of unlimited movie rentals with NetFlix or you could even purchase several new movies from a local store or online – movies that you and your family can watch multiple times.

Food cost

Purchasing tickets is only the beginning of the cash flowing out of your wallet.  What family can watch a movie without popcorn, candy and a soda?  Of course, each member of the family will probably want their own jumbo bucket of buttered popcorn and large soda, which could mean adding another $10 per person at the concession counter.  In the comfort of your home, you can pop your own popcorn, have the snacks and drinks of your choice – all without the inflated food and beverage surcharges.

Comfortable Seating

Your local cinema’s seats are not always very comfortable.  Seats are often placed close together to ensure maximum attendance numbers, so consideration for comfort is not especially important to theater owners and management.  For the typical family home theater, comfort is key with the overstuffed, leather theater recliners or plush sofas spaciously separated for plenty of room to put your feet up and relax.

Cleanliness

Let’s face the facts…movie theater floors are typically littered with popcorn kernels and sticky soda residue, while the chairs are covered with many wads of chewed up bubble gum.  Your home theater, on the other hand, can be clean and well kept – just as you like it.

Potty breaks

Remember the large sodas for everyone at the movie theater?  Inevitably, that soda has to make an exit.  Many parents have missed exciting scenes at the movies due to cries such as, “Mommy or Daddy, I really, really, REALLY can’t wait any longer.”  If this happens on family night in your own home theater, it is no big deal!  If your little one needs a potty break, you can easily hit the pause button and not miss one second of that most exciting, action-packed scene.

No cell phones

These days, what movie experience would be complete without the always present group of noisy teenagers more intent on chatting on the phone with their friends than quietly enjoying the movie on the big screen?   Of course, your family home theater should not be a stuffy place where you can’t laugh with the kids or make a few side comments to friends.  You will likely have a better chance, however, to hear the dialogue and catch the nuances of any scene, when you are watching the movie from the comfort of your home.

Visual quality

In most cases, it is hard to compete with the sheer size of the screen at your local cinema.  Consider the fact, however, that the visual quality of many cinema screens are often lacking, especially when a blockbuster movie picture begins to degrade after being shown multiple times a day for many weeks.  Many avid movie buffs have said that the picture quality in their home theater is actually better than that of the IMAX theater.  Certainly the IMAX picture is BIG, but they say that the IMAX picture itself is not very sharp and the contrast is also not as good as their home theater projectors.  You can enjoy crystal clear movie viewing at home at your leisure, with high definition projectors and TVs, along with HD-DVD and Blu-ray players.

Sound quality

Years ago, the only place to hear quality surround sound was at an upscale movie theater.  Today there are many options available to create just the right sound quality in your home.  In fact, a moderately priced home theater surround sound system with a subwoofer can surpass many movie theater sound systems.  Your family home theater can mesmerize family and guests with crystal clear voices, robust surround sound effects and powerful, theater shaking explosions.

It is no wonder that the popularity of family home theaters has soared over the past ten to fifteen years.  If you don’t have a room dedicated to the enjoyment of home theater, now is the time to make it happen.  A family home theater is achievable in rooms of all sizes, with budgets great and small.   You can certainly realize the magic of the movies in the comfort of your own home.
