Toshiba No-Glasses 3D TV

While consumer electronics manufacturers, dealers, and press in the U.S. are gearing up for the upcoming CEDIA EXPO, the annual IFA consumer electronics tradeshow is being held in Berlin, Germany. At this year’s show, Toshiba is creating quite a stir as it has delivered on its promise to have glasses-free 3D TV ready for the consumer market by 2012. The new 55ZL2 55-inch glasses-free, full HD resolution (1080p in 3D mode/4K in 2D mode) LCD TV is being displayed and indications are that it will be available in the UK and European market by the end of this year (2011). However, with a 7,999 Euro ($11,400 US) price tag, this set is definitely targeted to the upscale early adopter crowd.

Home Theaters Houston had the chance to see a prototype of Toshiba’s no-glasses 3D TV concept at the 2011 CES that was held this past January and we thought it had promise, but there were issues with limited viewing angles. However, according to reports, the new 55ZL2 has incorporated a 9-zone viewing system that allows the viewing of 3D from wider viewing angles.

We hope Toshiba brings this set to CES 2012, so that we can get our own eyes-on look. What we’ll be looking for is how the 3D effect actually does hold up at wider viewing angles, and how good its 4K resolution capability looks when showing 2D source material.
